چکیده

Over a 12-month period four patients developed acute renal failure after undergoing radiological investigations using contrast media. Though the incidence of serious complications is low, the possibility of adverse side effects must be weighed against the usefulness of the information provided by these techniques.

The molecular mechanism of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) and its link to in vitro studies on iodinated contrast media (CM)

Iodinated contrast media (iodinated CM) have increased ability to absorb x-rays and to visualize structures that normally are impossible to observe in a radiological examination. The use of iodinated CM may destory renal function, commonly known as contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), which can result in acute renal failure (ARF). This review article mainly focuses on the following areas: (1) cl...

Contrast-induced nephropathy.

Interventional radiological procedures involving anaesthesia are generally increasing. Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), usually defined as an increase in serum creatinine of 44 micromol litre(-1) (0.5 mg dl(-1)) or a 25% increase from the baseline value 48 h after intravascular injection of contrast media, is a common and potentially serious complication of the use of iodinated contrast medi...

Removal of contrast media by different extracorporeal treatments.

BACKGROUND Although the capability of extracorporeal treatments after administration of contrast media to prevent radiocontrast-induced nephropathy is controversial, haemodialysis is performed in many institutions after radiographic procedures. There are conflicting reports on the efficacy of different dialysers and treatment modalities to remove contrast media. METHODS We compared the contra...

Post-coronarography application of continuous veno-venous hemofiltration in the prevention of contrast nephropathy in patients with complex multisystem deficiency.

BACKGROUND An increased admission of high-risk patients to diagnostic and interventional radiological procedures with contrast medium has resulted in an increase of contrast-induced nephropathy, which now represents the third main cause of hospital-acquired acute renal failure. The pathogenic mechanism of contrast-induced nephropathy (CN) is unclear, but there is much evidence which indicated a...

Radiocontrast nephropathy: is it dose related or not?

OBJECTIVE To assess the safety of high dose non-ionic contrast media during a single radiological procedure in patients with pre-existing renal impairment. METHODS One hundred eighteen patients, with serum Creatinine greater than 1.3 mg/dl who were undergoing coronary angiography or percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography (PTCA) were included in the study. All patients received the non...
